John S Horgan

John Stephen Horgan, 79, of Orlando, was called home to the Lord in the early hours of Thursday, May 12, 2022. He passed peacefully in his home with family by his side.  John was born in Orange, New Jersey on August 8th, 1942 to Andrew B Horgan Jr and Helen Marion (Leith). He was the middle of 4 brothers, Rev. Paul L. Horgan S.J., Andrew B. Horgan III (Kathy) Micheal J. Horgan (Ellie), and Peter J. Horgan.  Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Paul and Drew, and his grandson Blaine  Horgan Prenger. Growing up, John was an avid swimmer and graduated from Xavier High School in Manhattan as captain of the swim team.  In his high school yearbook, John was commended for his “strong set of principals, and friendly attitude towards others”, which he unquestionably kept with him throughout his life.  After high school, John attended Seton Hall University and Florida Technological University (UCF).  He had various jobs throughout his life, but he’d tell anyone he was most proud of his service with the Air Force as a young man and then his work as a lineman for Southern Bell Telephone Company. He retired from Home Depot in the lumber department and then became a stay at home dad to his three youngest girls.   When not working, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at the beach, where he’d spend most of his time in the water, swimming out until he was just a speck on the horizon.  Using those skills as a swimmer to later instruct swimming lessons at the Dover Shores Pool, he earned the nickname, “Mr. Shamu.” Contributing to his active lifestyle was his love for bike riding. One of his “greatest rides” was a time he rode from his home in Orlando to Daytona Beach and back, in a single day.  Although John loved the outdoors his whole life, in recent years his favorite way to enjoy it was from his own front porch. From feeding the squirrels and birds, to waving at neighbors as they went by, he was a much welcomed staple to the neighborhood. John and his good friend, Tony M., rarely missed a morning with the birds, or an afternoon listening to music in the sun.  While his passing has left an emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, we now carry the honor of passing on our memories and his stories.  He is survived by his wife, Juanita, his daughters, Laura, Angela, Kathleen, Joni, Elizabeth, Catherine, Victoria, his only son Stephen, and 13 grandchildren.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
