One man is dead after he was involved in an officer-involved shooting outside of the Millenia Mall this past weekend.
According to Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolón, the incident took place around 7:12 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 outside of the Millenia Mall, which is located at 4200 Conroy Road in Orlando.
A man who was described as “acting odd around other people” was asked to leave the Neimann Marcus store at the mall. The man complied and at some point while he was being escorted out by an extra-duty officer, shots were fired.
Rolón says that it is unknown why the shots were fired, but that afterwards, the extra-duty officer called for backup, and a foot pursuit began.
The man, whose name has not been released, ran towards the Olive Garden where Rolón says a second shooting incident took place.
At that time, the man was killed by a gunshot.
According to police, it is unknown whether the man accidentally or intentionally shot himself, or if he was killed by fire from one of the police officers.
Rolón says his department is currently investigating bodyworn camera footage, as well as video surveillance obtained from the Mall of Millenia. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave while the case is investigated by both the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office of the Ninth Circuit Court.
