A semi driver was killed after his vehicle was rear-ended by a vehicle that witnesses say was traveling at a high speed on State Road 417 in Orange County.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place around 2:21 a.m. on Sunday, June 5.
A 2012 Mercedes E350 being driven by a 47-year-old was traveling southbound on SR 417 approaching mile marker 14.5 in the outside lane. Witnesses say the vehicle appeared to be traveling above the posted speed limit.
The driver failed to slow down before it struck the rear of a 2017 semi-truck that did not have a trailer attached.
After the impact, the semi-truck ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail, and entered a large embankment before it overturned. The Mercedes struck the concrete barrier and then rotated before colliding with the guardrail.
The driver of the semi-truck was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes was transported to Osceola Regional Hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
