A Winter Park attorney that has since been disbarred was sentenced to five years in prison after admitting to stealing $3 million from a 108-year-old woman.
Matthew Roby, who was arrested in 2021, agreed to a plea deal on Friday, June 24, for exploitation of an elderly person and grand theft of more than $100,000.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, Helen Kuhn, died earlier this month at the age of 108.
According to police, Kuhn was outraged that she was taken advantage of and helped detectives investigating the case. Kuhn taught school for 35 years, flew planes until the age of 93, and drove until the age of 101.
Detectives say that over $2.4 million of the money that Roby stole from Kuhn has been recovered.
Roby was a former partner at the now-defunct Roby DeGraw law firm, which offered estate planning, probate and trust services.
