Maj. Wilber John “Bill” Voorheis, 83, of Gainesville, GA, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 6, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 10, 1938, to the late Dr. Wilber Jay Voorheis and the late Reva Marie Voorheis. He and his family moved to Orlando, Florida in his youth, and he graduated from Edgewater High School in 1956. Bill earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Chapman College and joined the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for 20 years and retired after having earned the rank of Major. His stations and deployments across North America and East Asia inspired his love for travel. After retiring from the Air Force, Bill enjoyed a 20-year career with Lockheed Martin as a software engineer. Bill was an avid golfer, bowler, and overall sports fan, a love that he shared with his children and grandchildren, especially his grandson, Knox, who could recite the starting line-up of the Atlanta Braves at age 4! Bill was proud of all his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with each of them, especially when they were all together.
Bill was preceded in death by his sister Carol Joyce Voorheis, his brother Ray Voorheis (Carol Louise), his sister June Bolevich (Vincent), and his brother Daniel Voorheis.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol Ann, his son Jay Voorheis (Cristina), daughter Debra Jones (Jimmy), daughter Laura Baxter (Todd). Bill’s greatest joy was being a proud grandpa to his grandchildren: Savannah Voorheis (Colin), Jonah Voorheis (Allison), Ethan Voorheis, Parker Voorheis, James Jones, Caroline Jones, Colton Baxter, Anabelle Baxter, Knox Baxter, and great-granddaughter Reese Voorheis.
