A 22-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide for the hit-and-run death of 63-year-old Jorge Albert De Castro, who lived in Casselberry for over three decades.
Maya Alicia Calzada, who is from Winter Park, was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail on Friday, July 29, on multiple charges in connection with the death of De Castro, who was struck and killed on June 1 while he was walking his dog.
Casselberry Police officers who interviewed witnesses at the scene after the accident say that De Castro was walking across Eagle Circle at around 8:15 p.m. when he was struck by a silver Audi SUV that fled.
De Castro was pronounced deceased at the scene.
In addition to the homicide charge, Calzada faces multiple other charges, including leaving the scene of an accident involving death and perjury, among others.
De Castro was born in Jatibonico, Cuba, and came to the United States in 1962 with his mother. He spent his youth in Queens and Greenlawn, New York, and moved to Casselberry in 1990.
