Mother killed, child and dog injured in lightning strike in Winter Springs

A mother was killed and a child and dog were injured after lightning struck a tree at a Winter Springs park.

On Thursday, August 18, at around 2:20 p.m., the Winter Springs Police Department received multiple emergency calls regarding citizens being struck by lightning at Trotwood Park, which is located at 701 Northern Way in Winter Springs.

According to police, lightning apparently hit a nearby tree, energized the area, and struck the victims.

The mother was seriously injured and has since passed away. The child and dog were seen by medical professionals after the incident and are “doing fine,” according to police.

The name of the woman has not been released to the public.
