Tropical Storm Nicole strengthening as it nears Florida

Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches Florida and makes landfall in the state later tonight.

According to the National Hurricane Center, as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, the storm is moving over the Bahamas. Authorities predict that it ad will make its way to the east coast of Florida tonight.

Currently, the storm has maximum sustained winds near 70 mph and is considered a large tropical storm, extending outward up to 460 miles.

The storm is expected to move across central and northern Florida on Thursday, and then into the Georgia and the Carolinas by Thursday night and Friday morning.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect from Boca Raton to the Flagler/Volusia County line, while multiple other watches are in effect all throughout the state.

Osceola, Volusia, Seminole, and Orange Counties have cancelled classes at schools through the west of the week in anticipation of Tropical Storm Nicole, which comes less than six weeks after Hurricane Ian brought historic levels of flooding.

Officials in Orlando and Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties have established multiple locations for local residents to fill sandbags.
