The St. Lucia Festival will return to the Museum of Seminole County History in Sanford this weekend.
The festival will take place on Saturday, December 10, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum, which is located at 300 Eslinger Way in Sanford.
The event will feature Swedish dessert and beverage sampling, a reading of the Santa Lucia Legend and Lucia Procession, a Swedish history and decoration display, and a giant Dala horse, among many other activities. This year’s festival will also feature a performance by the Lake Mary Elementary and All Souls Catholic School Choir.
Named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse, the festival is a Swedish tradition that is celebrated every year on December 13. Lucia was a wealthy, young Christian martyr who vowed herself to God at an early age and is venerated as a Saint by Catholic and Orthodox Christians. She is the patron saint of blindness. In Sweden, the feast day of Lucia is celebrated as the Festival of Light.
