A 93-year-old Lake Mary woman was killed on Monday after her vehicle was struck by a SunRail train while she was attempting to cross the tracks.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal accident took place on Monday, December 19, at 3:37 p.m. on railroad tracks that run parallel to Old Lake Mary Road.
The woman was driving a 1994 Ford F-150 northbound on Old Lake Mary Road, approaching West Airport Boulevard. While the railroad gate arms were down and the signal lights were activated, the woman attempted to make a right turn to travel eastbound on West Airport Boulevard.
The F-150 entered the railroad tracks in the direct path of a SunRail train being driven by a 27-year-old Sanford man. The front of the train struck the right side of the vehicle.
The woman was pronounced deceased on the scene. The train engineer and passengers on the train were not injured in the crash. A roadblock had been established for the afternoon, but has since been cleared.
