DeLand law enforcement authorities are urging residents to lock their cars following more than a dozen car burglaries that took place in a subdivision over the weekend.

DeLand Police Department officers responded to the Bent Oaks Subdivision early on Monday, January 30, after receiving calls from 15 residents who said their vehicles were broken into overnight.

In all instances, police did not observe any signs of forced entry.

Among the items stolen were a firearm, a computer valued at $2,000, and multiple knives.

The incident follows a similar incident earlier this month that involved a rash of car break-ins involving 10 vehicles in the southeast side of the city.

Police say that in both cases, multiple firearms were stolen, prompting concerns that “weapons being stolen from vehicles could potentially be used to commit other violent crimes” in the community.

The majority of car burglaries are occurring during the late hours of the night.

If you see suspicious behavior during late night hours, contact 911 to report the behavior immediately.
