Three undocumented immigrants were arrested in Deltona after they allegedly crashed into a mother’s vehicle while her child was in the car before fleeing the scene and attempting to hide in nearby woods.

The accident took place along Catalina Boulevard in Deltona late Sunday, January 29, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, the woman was traveling southbound in her vehicle with her child when a car drifted into across the yellow lines and crashed into her vehicle. The woman and the child were not injured in the crash.

The driver and two passengers from the other vehicle abandoned the car and attempted to hide in the woods.

Deputies arrived on scene and, with the help of a drone, were able to find all three individuals who fled the vehicle.

The driver, Juan Cruz Hernandez, was found with a fraudulent ID and a temporary tag torn from the license plate bracket. During questioning, Hernandez admitted he had six beers to drink earlier in the evening.

His breath was tested approximately three hours after the crash and he produced results of .142 and .149 g/210L, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 in Florida.

Hernandez was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including driving under the influence with damage, and leaving the scene of a crash.

Hernandez is being held on no bond at the Volusia County Jail on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement immigration detainer. His two passengers were charged with resisting without violence.
