A 16-year-old was arrested after he allegedly fired shots from a moving vehicle while he was passing through an apartment complex in Sanford.
Sanford Police Department officers responded to the Overlook at Monroe Apartments at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Monday, February 20, after receiving reports of shots fired.
According to police, witnesses reported hearing shots fired in the area of building five at the complex, which is located at 100 Willner Circle. Those witnesses stated that a black male stuck his head out of a blue vehicle and shot multiple rounds at an unoccupied vehicle, causing damage to the vehicle.
During their investigation, detectives were able to positively identify the suspect as Dontavious Rashad Watkins.
On Thursday, February 23, Watkins was located and arrested without incident. Watkins, who is 16 years old, is facing charges of firing a weapon/discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and felony criminal mischief.
Last month, Sanford police released video showing a group of individuals suspected of killing 18-year-old Isaiah Diaz while he was in a parked car at the Hatteras Sound Apartments on November 20, 2022. That apartment complex is located less than two miles from where Watkins is accused of firing shots.
