An Apopka man was arrested this week in connection with a shooting that claimed the life of a 21-year-old last month.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jamal Keon Johnson on Tuesday, February 28, in connection with the death of Reed Nelson.

Nelson, who turned 21 years old in January, was found by sheriff’s office deputies after he had been shot in the 1300 block of South Highland Avenue on the morning of February 17.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

In the days since, homicide detectives gathered enough information to obtain an arrest warrant for Johnson.

Johnson faces a charge of first degree murder with a firearm and is currently being held at the Orange County Jail.

According to court records, Johnson was arrested in 2021 on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly fired seven shots at one of his relatives during a dispute. That case was eventually dropped in June 2022.
