Man dead, woman in serious condition after shooting at Sanford apartments

A man was killed and a woman is in serious condition in what police are labeling a domestic violence incident during a custody exchange at a Sanford apartment complex.

Sanford Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Bel-Air Apartments (900 E Airport Boulevard) on Sunday, March 5, at around 8:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, police discovered 27-year-old Myeia Kudakwashe suffering from a gunshot wound to her abdomen, and 29-year-old Steven Martin suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.

Both Kudakwashe and Martin were transported to a local hospital, where Martin died as a result of his injuries.

According to police, Kudakwashe was at the location earlier to exchange custody of her children with their father, who lives in the complex. Witnesses say that Kudakwashe appeared agitated when she arrived at the apartment complex.

Witnesses say Kudakwashe allegedly forced her way into an apartment before being forcefully removed. She left the complex a short time later, allegedly brandishing a firearm.

When Kudakwashe and Martin returned to the apartment complex, they were shot on a second-floor exterior walkway near the apartment she had previously entered.

The Sanford Police Department is currently investigating the details of what occurred. Anyone with information pertaining to this crime is asked to contact the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
