A rash of brush fires broke out over the past several days in various parts of Seminole and Volusia County following weeks of worsening drought conditions across the state of Florida.
On Saturday, April 1, Seminole County Fire Department units responded to a brush fire that broke out in a wooded area in a residential neighborhood along Vista Oak Drive in Longwood.
The fire caused no structural damage and no injuries. Authorities are unsure about what started the fire, but believe it could have been a ground transformer.
On Sunday, April 2, another brush fire broke out in the Lake Harney Woods in Geneva. Over 25 units from SCFD and Volusia County responded to the area and encountered a fire that spread to over 2.5 acres.
Multiple dozers were brought in to plow lines lines around the fire and although structures were threatened, there was no property damage or injuries reported.
A burn ban has been in effect for two weeks across multiple counties in Central Florida, including Orange, Osceola, and Seminole. As of March 30, most of Central Florida is classified as going through severe drought (D2).
