A 57-year-old man was killed and another man was airlifted to a hospital after one of the men’s vehicles veered out of its lane and crashed head-on with the other.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of 1849 E Normandy Boulevard, near Clay Court, after receiving reports of a crash around 11:54 a.m. on Monday, May 1.

Witnesses say that a man driving a black, Mitsubishi SUV, was traveling northbound when it veered into the center turn lane. The vehicle then abruptly turned back into the northbound lane before veering left into the center lane and hitting an oncoming Jeep SUV.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, 57-year-old Shawn Wainwright of Osteen, was transported to a a local emergency room where he was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Jeep was extricated by Deltona Fire Rescue and airlifted to a hospital, where he was last listed in stable condition.
