Insects in chicken, ricotta close pizza shop on Colonial Drive

A pizza restaurant on Colonial Drive was forced to temporarily close its doors for multiple days after a health inspector found over two dozen code violations, including insects in chicken and cheese.

NY Giant Breakfast and Pizza, which is located at 5643 E Colonial Drive, was shut down on Thursday, May 11, and Friday, May 12, after two failed health inspections conducted by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

During the first inspection on May 11, the inspector cited 25 health code violations, including 9 considered high priority.

Among the issues cited was the presence of both roaches and live, flying insects. In total, nearly a dozen live roaches and over 70 live, small flying insects were found throughout various parts of the restaurant.

The inspector issued a stop sale on a batch of cooked chicken after finding a dead flying insect inside, as well as ricotta after finding a live flying insect inside. Additionally, a batch of moldy fettuccine was found on a reach-in cooler behind a pasta station.

During the second inspection on May 12, at least 14 violations were cited, including the presence of live roaches. The inspector cited at least 10 live roaches found on the cook line and near a sink in the kitchen. Additionally, the inspector issued a stop sale for all products on a pizza table for being held overnight at between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

The restaurant was inspected for a third time on Monday, May 15, and was permitted to reopen after only five violations were cited.
