69-year-old killed in accident that shut down SR 417 for hours

An Orlando man has died from injuries he sustained after his vehicle crashed into another vehicle on State Road 417 this morning.

The accident took place in the northbound lanes of SR 417, near mile marker 24 in Orlando at around 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24.

According to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old Orlando male was driving a 2022 Dodge Challenger northbound on the highway when he attempted to change lanes and lost control of his vehicle.

The vehicle struck the outside shoulder guardrail, crossed the northbound lanes, and crashed into the inside shoulder concrete wall barrier before colliding with a 2014 Ford Escape being driven by a 69-year-old Orlando man.

The impact caused the Ford to overturn multiple times on the highway before coming to final rest on its roof.

The 18-year-old was not injured in the crash and remained on the scene.

The 69-year-old man was transported as a trauma alert to UCF Lake Nona Hospital in critical condition. In the hours after the accident, authorities reported that the man died from his injuries.

A roadblock on Wednesday morning was in place for all northbound lanes of SR 417, south of State Road 528 (mile marker 24). Traffic was diverted for several hours, according to authorities.
