A German Shepherd that served on the Orlando Police Department K-9 unit was laid to rest this week after battling cancer.
On Thursday, OPD announced the passing of K-9 Vice, who had been diagnosed with cancer.
“We are grateful for the dedicated years of service he gave to the City of Orlando,” reads a statement from OPD.
Vice’s handler, officer Mitch Bowhay, described his partner as a “sweet boy who loved everybody.” He added that it is “crazy” how sweet Vice was, considering that he was a “police dog.”
“Rest in peace, K-9 Vice. You will be missed,” reads the statement.
The Orlando Police Department founded its K-9 Unit in 1966. There are currently 14 dual-purpose canines serving OPD. Half of the units are used for narcotics detection, while the other half are designated for bomb detection. In addition, canines are used to track and apprehend felony offenders.
