Fire breaks out in recycling truck from ‘improper disposal’

Orange County officials are warning the public of the dangers of improper waste disposal after a fire broke out inside of a recycling truck this week.

On Wednesday, Orange County government officials reported that one of their Solid Waste haulers carrying recycled goods broke out into flames.

According to officials, the cause of the fire was likely rechargeable batters or other hazardous materials that were disposed of in a recycling cart.

“Don’t put household hazardous or electric waste in the recycling or garbage cart,” reads a statement from the government.

Household hazardous waste items include paint, batteries, fluorescent lightbulbs, cooking oil, motor oil, and a variety of other materials. It also includes electronics like cell phones, computers and televisions.

For more information on what qualifies as a hazardous household material, or to find out where to dispose of said materials, visit the Household Hazardous Waste website through the Orange County government.
