Airline stepping in as 93 laid off at Orlando Sanford Airport

An airline is stepping in to provide positions to multiple employees who are scheduled to be laid off by the Orlando Sanford International Airport in the coming months.

The airport will lay off 93 employees from transportation and warehousing “as a result of unforeseeable business circumstances,” according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the state on July 20.

The airport says the layoffs are scheduled to begin on September 25, 2023. The terminated include above wing passenger care and service positions, as well as trainers and administrative employees.

In a statement to Orlando-News.com, Allegiant Airlines confirmed that the company will absorb many of the jobs that are scheduled for termination.

“Allegiant is absorbing responsibility of our above wing services at SFB. TBI/Vinci will continue to perform below wing services for us at the airport,” reads a statement from the company.

The airline, which recently announced a new direct route to North Dakota from the airport, says it found that in some instances, it made sense to perform the services “in house.” It says TBI/Vinci gate agents, ticket agents, and those performing passenger assistance who want to work the same position for Allegiant are “guaranteed jobs after passing a background check.”
