The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to register their home security cameras with the county as part of a new registry system created to help “keep our community safe.”
Officials are encouraging local residents to voluntarily register their devices to enable investigators to ask for footage, but not directly access it.
“When crimes happen, video evidence is one of our most powerful investigative tools,” reads a statement from OCSO. “This new camera registry allows our first responders and detectives to more quickly and easily locate the nearest cameras.”
According to the sheriff’s office, contact details and a map of active cameras will be kept private and only be accessible by OCSO. Residents may choose whether to share video on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to residents, businesses may also integrate their cameras so that law enforcement can have real-time access in the event of a crime.
