A 20-year-old man was killed after he was pulled over by police in Volusia County in a vehicle wanted in connection with an altercation.
On Friday, August 25, DeLand Police Department officers were investigating a burglary when they saw a white Dodge Charger that they believed was connected to an incident that took place the week prior.
During that incident on August 17, two victims were approached by an unknown suspect who pointed a gun at them and pulled the trigger multiple times. The weapon malfunctioned and the suspect subsequently ran off.
Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at W. Euclid Avenue and S. Woodland Boulevard.
According to DPD, a sergeant and a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detective fired into the vehicle and fatally shot Jayvion Barthel, who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.
Barthel, 20, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities say that their “initial investigation indicates” that Barthel was in possession of a firearm. The weapon in question was recovered from the floorboard of the backseat where Barthel was sitting.
The driver of the vehicle and the front-seat passenger have been detained while police investigate.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into the circumstances leading up to and including the incident.
Since the altercation on August 17, detectives have been working to identify the person(s) involved in the attempted shooting. According to DPD, the detectives developed leads in that case that included the make and model of the vehicle involved.
“At this time, investigators are still working to determine who the individual was, who brandished the firearm and tried to shoot the two victims, along with a second individual who was present that morning as well,” reads a statement from DPD.
Currently, a cash reward is available for anyone with information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the gunman in the August 17 incident.
The officers who fatally shot Barthel have been placed on administrative leave pending FLDE’s investigation.
