Hurricane Idalia has made landfall in Florida as a category 3 hurricane and is currently near Tallahassee, producing maximum sustained winds of 120 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, as of 8 a.m., Hurricane Idalia is moving north-northeast at around 18 mph and should move out of Florida and into southern Georgia later today. The storm is about 10 miles south-southeast of Perry, Florida.
The NWS predicts that Idalia will “weaken further now that the center is inland,” and that it will likely remain a strong hurricane as it passes through the state today.
Currently, hurricane-force winds are extending outward up to 25 miles an hours from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds are extending outward up to 175 miles.
Water levels along the coast of the Florida Big Bend are rising rapidly, according to the NWS. The hurricane is producing “catastrophic storm surge” along the Gulf Coast of Florida.
