Orlando police have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with a drive-by shooting that claimed the lives of two others, including a 6-year-old girl who was sitting in her living room.

Nico Brown was arrested by Orlando Police Department officers on Saturday, September 2, in connection with the deaths of 6-year-old Ajahliyah Hashim and 19-year-old Isaiyah Wright.

The arrest comes several days after the drive-by shooting in the 1100 block of Poppy Avenue.

During that incident on August 29, police responded to reports of a shooting and, upon arrival, located 6-year-old Ajahliyah Hashim and her mother suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a local hospital. Hashim passed away from her injuries in the days that followed.

According to police, Hashim was sitting inside her living room when she was shot by stray bullets. She and her mother were not the intended targets of the shooting, police say.

Wright was located at Health Central Hospital a short time after the shooting. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Hashim was a student at Eagle’s Nest Elementary School, according to a statement issued by Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Maria F. Vazquez.

“My heart goes out to the Eagle’s Nest Elementary community, which just lost a 6-year-old student to gun violence last night,” said Vazquez. “Our students should not have to live in a world where their lives are in danger in their own neighborhoods.”
