Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating separate instances in which burial headstones were damaged at an Apopka cemetery.
According to a press release from Apopka Police Department, on Saturday, September 2, officers responded to Edgewood Cemetery at about 8 p.m. in reference to a damaged burial headstone.
Upon arrival, the victim told police that a family member’s headstone had been damaged. No additional details were provided regarding the extent of the damage.
On Sunday, September 3, APD officers responded once again to the cemetery, which is located at 331 East 1st Street in Apopka. During their second visit, police found a second headstone that had been damaged.
No additional details were provided regarding the second incident.
The Apopka Police Department is actively investigating both of the incidents. According to police, the families of the decedents have been “devastated due to the lack of empathy shown by the perpetrators.”
The victims in both cases have invoked Marsy’s Law for confidentiality.
Anyone with information that may be helpful to police during their investigation is asked to contact the Apopka Police Department at 407-703-1771, or the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
