John Truitt of Orlando, Florida – We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of John Oliver Truitt in his home, on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at the age of 88. He was born September 18, 1934, in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey before coming to live in Coral Gables, Florida in 1939.
He was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Lillian Herndon and his son, John Austin Truitt.
He is survived by his wife Nancy and (step) daughter Teresa Timmons, daughter Victoria Truitt, and son and daughter- in- law Gregory and Angela Truitt. Five grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
He graduated from Coral Gables Sr. High Class of 52′, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Miami, 70′ and Masters Degree in Criminal Justice John Jay College 87′.
He proudly served with the US Air Force Reserves 435 Troop Carrier Wing, Air Force Squadron, from 1953 and honorably discharged in 1961. He served with Dade County Sheriff’s Office from 1955-1965 achieving the Rank of Sergent. He continued his law enforcement career in several capacities with the Department of Justice, New Jersey State Police, Coral Gables Police and as the Director of the Miami Dade County Schools Police Dept from 1973-1977.
In addition, he developed the Continuing Education Programs with regards to Law Enforcement Policies, Procedure and Management at the University of Georgia and Biscayne College (St Thomas University) Centers for Continuing Education.
He enjoyed several hobbies, including Herpetology, Model Railroading, and restoring antique cars. During his life he published books on Common Snakes and Lizards of So Florida, The Dynamics of Police Administration, The Dynamics of Corrections Administration and a Photographic Memory of the New York and Long Branch Railroads.
John loved the many friends and associates he had gained through his professional endeavors and hobbies. His family and friends loved him dearly, his humor and intellect were equally admired and cherished.
A graveside service will be held at the White Lawn Cemetery 900 Trenton Ave. Point Pleasant, N.J. 08742 on October 9th, 2023 at 1p.m.
