A 32-year-old Orlando father has been arrested after doctors told police that his infant son, who is currently on life support, had “severe brain injuries” that were consistent with “abuse from shaking.”
Malcolm Nelson was taken into custody by Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies on September 28.
Detectives say they were notified of the case on January 24, 2023, the day after the infant was rushed to the emergency room. According to VCSO, the baby, who was 3 months old at the time, lost consciousness at home in Ormond Beach and went into cardiac arrest.
After an extensive medical evaluation and treatment, doctors determined that the infant had suffered several injuries and fractures that resulted from “physical abuse such as shaking.”
Detectives conducted interviews and, during their investigation, determined that Nelson had shaken the infant in the past, including the morning he became unresponsive.
The infant, who is now 11 months old, was on life support as of Wednesday afternoon.
An arrest warrant for Nelson was executed last week and he was arrested in Orlando. He was transported from the Orange County Jail to the Volusia County Jail on Tuesday, October 3. He is being held on $150,000 bond.
