Nancy M. Kaufman, 92, of Winter Park passed away peacefully at home on November 19, 2023, with her children by her side.
Nancy was born December 7, 1930, in Springfield, MA to the late Ray and Liz Meffen. She graduated from Great Neck HS, Great Neck, NY, and attended LaSalle Junior College, Newton, MA. She spent her working career as a secretary beginning in New York, NY (NYC) at the National League for Nursing. She met her husband, Jerome Kaufman, in NYC while volunteering with the Blackfriars Rep Theatre group. They married in February 1958 and were married until his passing in August 1977. They lived with their three children in NYC and Hazlet, NJ.
After being a stay-at-home mom, she returned to the workforce at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, NJ writing ‘happiness is having worked at Brookdale’ when she resigned to move with her youngest child in 1980 to Winter Park where she resided for the remainder of her life. Upon retirement, Nancy volunteered as an adult literacy tutor at Seminole Community College and for many years as a dividend at Eastbrook Elementary School, Winter Park. Tutoring adults and helping the 3rd & 4th graders with their reading brought her great fulfillment.
She was a longtime (33 plus years!) member of New Covenant Church, Winter Springs faithfully serving as a greeter for most of those years welcoming all who entered with a big hug and beautiful smile. She served in many other areas of the church through the years including a Friday morning prayer group, as a small group leader, as well as going on mission trips. Nancy was very artistic whether painting in watercolor, arranging a bouquet of flowers, or wrapping a Christmas gift.
She enjoyed working in her garden and a good cup of coffee. Her eyes would sparkle when she would greet you and she never knew a stranger. Hearing her grandsons call her Gammie brought her endless joy. Her love for the Lord, her family, and her church family was evident to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Kaufman, sister and brother-in-law Rae and Robert Kirkwood, and grandson Aaron Jacob.
Nancy is survived by her children Rachel Kaufman, Kendrick Kaufman, Claudia (Richard) Sava, and grandsons Benjamin (Amanda) and Craig.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 11:00 a.m. at New Covenant Church, 800 Tuskawilla Rd., Winter Springs, FL 32708. Reception to follow.
