Carl Pain, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on Tuesday December 12, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born December 9, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He graduated from St. Cloud High School, attended Stetson University on a baseball scholarship, and earned his undergraduate degree from Florida Technological University. Serving in the U.S. Navy, Carl was stationed in Rota, Spain. He found himself regretting his poor effort in Spanish class when a beautiful young Spanish woman sat next to him at a bull fight. Juanita would become the love of his life, the mother of his children and the reason he later earned a Masters Degree in Spanish.
Carl went on to work as a guidance counselor at Lake Howell High School and became the winningest girls’ golf coach in the state of Florida. After suffering a heart attack and undergoing bypass surgery, Carl sought to comfort others who found themselves in this situation. He became the founding member of the local chapter of Mended Hearts, an organization dedicated to helping people get through the frightening times that follow a heart attack. Every week, Carl volunteered to visit patients in the hospital to ease their fears about their upcoming open-heart surgery and to offer reassurance to those just out of surgery that they too could recover as he had.
Carl enjoyed playing golf, watching sports (especially the Orioles), and loved having a house full of family.
He is survived by his wife Juanita, his three daughters: Yolanda and husband Darryl, Jessica and husband Alex, Liz and partner Brendon, his five grandchildren: Andie and husband Keith, Syndney, Carlie, Natalia and Nathan, and his great grandson Bowers.
