Over 400 janitors fired across Florida after company loses Amazon contract

Over 400 custodial employees across Florida, including over 100 in Orlando, will lose their jobs after the company for which they work reportedly lost its contract with Amazon.

GDI Integrated Facility Services made the announcement on January 4 in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing with the Florida Department of Commerce.

The company “recently learned that its contract with Amazon, Inc.” will end and “will not be renewed,” according to the filing.

The contract that the companies had in place called for GDI to provide “janitorial and facilities services at certain Amazon locations.” Now, the company says that it will “no longer employ and will terminate all of its employees currently providing” services at all Amazon Warehouses.

Among those scheduled for layoff are at least 106 employees from the company’s business in Orlando, which does business at the Amazon Distribution center at 12340 Boggy Creek Road.

The filing shows that at least 60 trash and corrugate employees are scheduled for termination, as well as 33 general cleaners.

In addition to those terminated in Orlando, approximately 332 other employees will be laid off from locations in Deltona, Opa Locka, Ruskin, Lakeland, and Auburndale.

Across the country, the company announced that it will terminate approximately 1,867 employees in multiple states including South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, and Kentucky, among others.

All of the layoffs are scheduled to take place by March 5, 2024.

“The entirety of the company’s services will cease at these Amazon Warehouses and this action is expected to be permanent,” reads the WARN statement. “All employees will be separated from employment during this period unless they remain employed elsewhere with the company.”

The affected employees are not represented by a union and have no bumping rights, according to the filing.
