18-year-old killed during attempted apartment invasion in Orlando

An 18-year-old was killed during an attempted home invasion at an Orlando apartment complex.

On Wednesday, January 31, Orlando Police Department Homicide Detectives provided details about the fatal shooting, which took place on Tuesday afternoon.

According to authorities, officers responded to the Jernigan Apartments in the 1400 block of Mercy Drive at around 1:14 p.m. in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located an individual in the breezeway of one of the buildings with a gun shot wound.

The individual, who was later identified as Kevin Dewayne Hodges, was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police found a second individual inside the apartment with a gun shot wound. That person was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.

During their investigation, police determined that the shooting began as a home invasion “that led to the resident firing at the suspect,” according to a statement from OPD.

“At this stage of the investigation, there are no further individuals with gun shot wounds other than the two listed above…We. believe there are no suspects outstanding in the case,” reads the statement.
