Larry Darnell Adderly, Sr.

Larry D. Adderly Sr., 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024, in Orlando, Florida.

Larry was born on November 25, 1949, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and reared by his grandmother, Mrs. Josephine “Big Mama” Sims Smith who preceded his death. After graduating from Chisholm High School in 1967, Larry attended the University of South Florida (Tampa). He later attended and graduated in 1974 from Radio Engineering Institute in Sarasota, FL. Shortly afterward, Larry obtained a 1st Class Broadcast Engineer license from the Federal Communications Commission and became a Broadcast Engineer. This license granted him the responsibility of keeping scheduled broadcasts running, setting up live broadcasts, maintaining and updating broadcasting hardware and software, and working on radio and television transmitters.

Larry began his career as an Assistant Broadcast Engineer at WTOG-TV (St. Petersburg) in 1975. This was the beginning of a career in television and radio broadcasting for 47 years including employment with, but not limited to, WOKB-1600 AM (Orlando), WESH-TV (Winter Park), and United Broadcast Services (Orlando) as an independent contractor. Larry began working at Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, FL, in 2005 as the Chief Broadcast Engineer for WRWS-LP, the campus radio station. He officially retired from this position in 2022.

Larry lived a life advocating for social justice, equality, and Pan Africanism; and, he embraced the culture of his African ancestors. His passion as an African percussionist, whether solo or with an ensemble, included performances at Busch Gardens (Tampa); numerous cultural festivals, and other events throughout Florida.

A memorial service will be held on March 9, at 12 p.m. at Gail and Wynn’s Chapel, located at 1300 Bruton Blvd. in Orlando.
