Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday afternoon after they reportedly carjacked a victim at gunpoint and stole his Corvette before fleeing from Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
At around 3:45 p.m., VCSO deputies responded to a report of a carjacking incident on S Thompson Street in DeLand. The male victim told deputies that “two masked suspects dressed in black” pulled up beside him, and one of the suspects pointed a gun at him, according to the sheriff’s office.
The victim further stated that the armed suspect threatened to kill him and “pistol-whipped” him in the head before pulling him out of his black 2019 Chevrolet Corvette.
Shortly after the suspects took off in the victim’s Corvette, the VCSO Air One unit spotted the vehicle. Volusia deputies and DeLand Police Department officers pursued the suspects while the aerial unit continued following overhead, according to the sheriff’s office.
The pursuit eventually ended when the suspects came to a final stop off State Road 472.
One of the suspects remained in the Corvette while the other suspect fled on foot into the nearby woods.
By around 4:30 p.m., both suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as 23-year-old Mikell Bailey, and the second suspect was identified as 31-year-old Britten Artrice Polk. Both suspects are from DeLand.
According to the sheriff’s office, two firearms were recovered from the scene, along with a black mask, gloves, and additional unspecified evidence.
Bailey is being charged with armed carjacking and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants for burglary, grand theft, and witness tampering charges.
Polk is being charged with possession of a firearm/ammunition by a convicted felon and violation of probation.
Both suspects were arrested and transported to Volusia County Jail, where they are currently being held without bond.
