Elderly pedestrian struck and killed by car in Volusia County

An elderly man crossing a local roadway was killed on Friday morning after he was struck by a car in Volusia County.

At around 5 a.m., a 2006 Chevrolet Impala was traveling westbound on International Speedway Boulevard, near the intersection of Lanscam Lane, in the outside lane, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A trooper noted that at the same time, an 81-year-old man from DeLand was walking in a northerly direction on International Speedway Boulevard. He was not in a marked crosswalk, and he proceeded to walk directly into the path of the car.

The front left of the car collided with the pedestrian. The elderly man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the report.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 26-year-old Daytona Beach man, was not injured. After the collision, he remained at the scene.

In the report, the trooper noted that the crash remains under investigation.

The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
