A 71-year-old man from Daytona Beach was struck and killed by a semi-truck in Volusia County early Saturday morning.
The fatal accident occurred near the intersection of W International Speedway Boulevard and Grande Champion Boulevard on Saturday, April 20, shortly after 12 a.m.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the semi-truck was traveling eastbound on W International Speedway Boulevard in the outside lane.
As the semi-truck approached the intersection of Grande Champion Boulevard, the 71-year-old man was walking in a southerly direction along W International Speedway Boulevard.
FHP stated that the pedestrian proceeded to walk across the eastbound lanes of W International Speedway Boulevard. He was not in a marked crosswalk, and he stepped directly into the path of the semi-truck.
A collision ensued, and the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver and sole occupant of the semi-truck, a 53-year-old Jacksonville man, was uninjured and remained at the scene.
An FHP trooper noted in the report that the crash remains under investigation.
