A 34-year-old motorcyclist from Ormond Beach was killed on Friday evening after he collided with an SUV that was turning at an intersection in Volusia County.
The fatal accident took place at the intersection of LPGA Boulevard and Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach on Friday, May 3, at around 5:40 p.m.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcycle (2007 Yamaha YZF-R6) was traveling eastbound on LPGA Boulevard, near the intersection of Derbyshire Road, in the left turn lane.
An SUV (2012 Ford Escape) was also traveling westbound on LPGA Boulevard, near the same intersection.
Several witnesses told FHP that the motorcycle was traveling above the posted speed limit on LPGA Boulevard when the SUV began making a left turn onto Derbyshire Road. Moments later, the motorcycle entered the direct path of the SUV and a collision ensued.
The report stated that the front of the motorcycle struck the front of the SUV. After the impact, the motorcyclist was thrown off his vehicle into a nearby parking lot.
The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name was not released by FHP.
The SUV’s driver and sole occupant, a 54-year-old man from Ormond Beach, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to the crash, the intersection of LPGA Boulevard and Derbyshire Road was temporarily blocked for approximately three hours.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
