Detectives ID 2nd gunman in Sanford shooting that injured NFL player, 9 others

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office has identified the second gunman who was involved in a shooting at Cabana Live in Sanford that wounded 10 people, including an NFL player, in April.

After conducting interviews and reviewing evidence provided by Cabana Live, the sheriff’s office announced on Thursday, June 6, that its detectives have positively identified 20-year-old Chase Gavin Gillespie, of Tallahassee, as the second shooter.

According to SCSO, the State Attorney’s Office of the 18th Judicial Circuit will determine if any charges against Gillespie are warranted based on the facts of the case.

The shooting occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Cabana Live located at 4380 Carraway Place in unincorporated Sanford.

Shortly after midnight, SCSO deputies responded to the venue to establish an area patrol due to a large crowd of around 200 individuals. The event was promoted as “Nobody Leaves Sober,” and the sheriff’s office stated that it did not have the required event permit.

Soon after arriving at Cabana Live, the deputies heard multiple gunshots near the back of the establishment.

According to SCSO, a total of ten victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the shooting incident. One of those victims was later identified as Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell.

The sheriff’s office stated that nine of the victims received treatment and were released from the hospital. No further details were provided regarding the victims.

An investigation was quickly launched by SCSO detectives, and they determined that the incident began as a physical altercation between several attendees. During the fight, Bouie allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds towards a crowd of people.

After being apprehended by the security guard, Bouie was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. He is being charged with attempted homicide, possession of a firearm by a minor, use and display of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and firing a weapon on public property.

“We’re fortunate no one is dead or more people injured,” stated Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma on April 29. The sheriff further credited the actions of the security guard as heroic, stating that the security guard “literally tackled (Bouie) from behind, got his weapon, and delivered him to us in handcuffs.”

During the investigation into the shooting,  SCSO detectives later discovered that a second unidentified shooter, later identified as Chase Gavin Gillespie, had returned fire with an additional five rounds.

According to Seminole County Court records, an arraignment hearing for Bouie will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18.
