Orlando named best city in America for staycations

Orlando was recently named the best city in the United States for enjoying a “fun-filled yet wallet-friendly” staycation.

Last week, WalletHub announced its 2024 Best & Worst Cities for Staycations, ranking the City Beautiful as the best city for staycationers.

According to WalletHub, the company compared more than 180 cities across three key dimensions: Recreation; Food & Entertainment; and Rest & Relaxation. Those dimensions were broken down into 42 key metrics, including diversity of restaurants, presence of highly rated amusement or water parks, and recreational facilities.

Those metrics were each graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions for staycations. WalletHub then calculated each city’s weighted average across all metrics to determine its overall score.

According to the list, Orlando earned a top overall score of 61.85, ranking first in the Food & Entertainment category. The City Beautiful also ranked highly on the list for Rest & Relaxation (18th) and Recreation (24th).

“Orlando, FL, is the best city for a staycation due to the fact that there are so many different things to do in the city,” states WalletHub. The city was praised by the company for its “extremely high number of amusement parks, water parks, nightlife activities, festivals, zoos and arcades per capita.”

In addition, Orlando was recognized for having “plenty of affordable restaurants” with a rating of at least 4.5 stars out of 5.

WalletHub ranked Honolulu, Hawaii, as the second-best city for a staycation, with an overall score of 60.92. The popular vacation destination offers plenty of opportunities to take part in outdoor activities while also having numerous low-cost spas and affordable, good quality restaurants.

Orlando was one of 11 cities in Florida that made the list, including Tampa (#5), Fort Lauderdale (#16), St. Petersburg (#33), Miami (#42), Jacksonville (#67), Cape Coral (#82), Tallahassee (#103), Pembroke Pines (#125), Port St. Lucie (#133), and Hialeah (#175).

Earlier this year, Orlando topped the list of best U.S. cities for hosting meetings and events, and the City Beautiful was also ranked among the best 150 places to live in the country.
