Elderly woman drowns in lake behind Deltona home

A 74-year-old woman died on Sunday after she was found unresponsive in a lake behind her home in Deltona.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Deltona Fire Rescue personnel were dispatched to a home located in the 400 block of Fort Smith Boulevard at around 5:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, after an elderly man reported that his wife was floating face down in a lake.

The man had pulled his wife out of the lake by the time that first responders arrived at the scene. Paramedics immediately began life-saving measures, but the woman was pronounced deceased shortly before 5:50 p.m.

The woman has been identified by the sheriff’s office as 74-year-old Bethania Germosen.

VCSO stated on social media that Germosen regularly fed ducks and turtles that lived in the lake behind her residence. Deputies also learned that she had “some recent and long-term medical issues,” and she was unable to swim.

Deputies ultimately determined that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Germosen’s death. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine her cause of death.

“The Sheriff’s Office sends its sincere condolences to all of her family and friends for their loss,” stated VCSO.
