A 22-year-old man was shot and killed on Saturday night while attempting to sell a pair of headphones near a home in Sanford.

According to the Sanford Police Department, officers responded to the 1800 block of W 3rd Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, in reference to a shooting incident that occurred in front of a residence. Upon arrival, they observed a pickup truck that was partially submerged in a nearby retention pond.

SPD stated that a man, later identified as 22-year-old Brandon Leo, was located inside the truck. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, (the victim) was meeting an unknown individual for the purpose of selling a pair of headphones,” stated the police department in a social media post.

According to police, the victim arrived at the residence located in the 1800 block of W 3rd Street, and he parked his pickup truck in the driveway. While waiting inside the vehicle, at least two unknown individuals approached the driver’s side.

Moments later, the victim began reversing out of the driveway. Several gunshots were then fired, and the truck continued to travel in reverse until it entered the retention pond, where it was located by officers, according to SPD.

No further details were provided by law enforcement.

Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith released the following statement regarding the fatal shooting: “A family is grieving the loss of their son over a pair of headphones. Senseless doesn’t begin to describe this tragedy. Our investigators have been working diligently to locate these two individuals who clearly have no regard for the value of a human life.”
