The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has identified a man who was shot and killed by deputies last week, hours after he allegedly stabbed and shot a woman and held a child hostage inside an Orlando home.

Deshaun Albert Dunmyer, 31, has been identified as the suspect in this case, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Friday, July 19, at around 5 p.m., deputies responded to a residence located in the 6800 block of Colony Oaks Lane. According to OCSO, the mother of the suspect’s child had been shot and stabbed inside the home, and the suspect remained inside with the child while armed with a gun.

Over a several-hour period, deputies negotiated with the suspect. However, the sheriff’s office stated that the suspect continued to “hold his child hostage” and “refused to surrender.”

According to OCSO, the standoff came to an end when SWAT team members breached the front door. They observed the suspect “holding the child as a shield with the gun in his hand,” and they proceeded to shoot and kill the suspect.

“Thankfully, the child was unharmed in this incident,” stated OCSO.

The child’s mother was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where she underwent surgery to treat her injuries. In an update on Monday, July 22, the sheriff’s office stated that she remains in the hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting incident and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once this process has been completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation.

During a press conference held on Saturday, July 20, Sheriff Mina stated that it is unclear if the suspect returned fire during the shooting incident. The sheriff added that there is body camera footage of the incident, which will be released within 30 days.

The deputies who fired their weapons are on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the results of the FDLE investigation.
