A 37-year-old man was arrested in Central Florida after he allegedly ran over a beachgoer while riding an electric bike.

On Monday, July 22, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrested Logan Knapik in connection with an e-bike crash that occurred on a local beach in May.

According to VCSO, shortly after 5 p.m. on May 27, 2024, Knapik was exceeding the speed limit while riding an e-bike “outside the traffic lanes” when he allegedly ran over a man who was playing soccer on a Volusia County beach.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. His name was not released by VCSO.

The sheriff’s office stated that Knapik left the scene of the accident prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Nearly months after the incident, on July 22, Knapik was located, placed under arrest, and transported to Volusia County Jail. He was released the following day after posting a $3,000 bond, and he is facing the following charges: leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and operating an electric bike in a manner likely to cause harm.

After Knapik’s arrest, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office posted the following reminder on social media: “E-bikes and other electric modes of transportation are subject to the same laws as motor vehicles on Volusia County Beaches.”

Those operating electric modes of transportation, including e-bikes, near Volusia’s beaches must adhere to the 10-mph speed limit. In addition, they cannot operate any vehicles in non-driving areas of the beach, and they must stay out of marked conservation zones.
