A 28-year-old Deltona man died on Saturday night after his car rear-ended another vehicle and crashed into a tree on Interstate 4 in Volusia County.
The fatal accident occurred on I-4 eastbound at around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, near mile marker 106, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP stated that the Deltona man, who was the sole occupant of a 2011 Nissan Altima, was traveling eastbound on I-4 in the outside lane. A witness told troopers that the man was speeding when he failed to observe two vehicles – a 2016 Kia Optima and 2020 Nissan Rogue – that were ahead of him in the same lane.
As a result, the front of the Altima collided with the rear of the Optima, which then caused the Optima to rear-end the Rogue.
After the initial impact, the Altima veered off the roadway onto the outside shoulder before striking a tree. The report stated that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and he was ejected from his vehicle.
The Altima’s driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The two other drivers involved, a 52-year-old DeBary man and 56-year-old Port Orange man, were not injured.
A trooper noted in the report that the crash remains under investigation.
