Passenger killed, driver critically hurt in crash on I-4

A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 4 in Volusia County left one man dead and another critically injured on Sunday morning.

The fatal crash occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 25, on I-4 eastbound, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

In the report, a trooper noted that a 51-year-old DeLand man (driver) and 23-year-old Jacksonville man (passenger) were heading eastbound on I-4 in a 1996 Honda Civic.

When the Honda reached mile marker 105, the report stated that the driver lost control, and the car veered off the roadway and onto the outside shoulder.

Moments later, the car crashed into several trees. The passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle following the impact, according to the report.

The passenger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

The driver was transported to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford in critical condition. The report stated that it is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
