A fiery two-vehicle collision in Volusia County left a woman dead and a man critically injured early Sunday morning.
The fatal crash occurred at around 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 1, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and Lake Winona Road.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 22-year-old DeLand man was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 17, north of the Lake Winona Road intersection, in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
For reasons that are unknown, the pickup truck veered into the oncoming lane, directly in the path of a 2015 Jeep Wrangler that was heading northbound on U.S. Highway 17. As a result, the front of the pickup truck collided with the front of the SUV.
After the initial impact, the SUV proceeded to travel off the roadway before overturning and becoming engulfed in flames. The vehicle’s driver and sole occupant, a 19-year-old DeLand woman, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver and sole occupant of the pickup truck was airlifted to a local hospital as a trauma alert. His condition was listed in the report as “critical.”
The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
