A fatal single-vehicle crash slowed traffic on Florida’s Turnpike in Orange County on Monday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred at around 3:05 p.m. on Monday, December 9, on the northbound Turnpike exit ramp to the eastbound I-4 Express in Orlando.
FHP stated that preliminary evidence shows that a 1993 Mazda MX-5 was traveling northbound on the Turnpike exit ramp to I-4 Express, at mile marker 259, in the outside lane. As the vehicle began to change lanes by moving towards the inside lane, the driver lost control.
The driver overcorrected to the right, which caused the Mazda to strike the concrete wall barrier on the outside shoulder. After the initial impact, the driver overcorrected to the left and collided with the concrete wall barrier on the inside shoulder.
The Mazda proceeded to roll onto its roof before coming to a final rest.
The unidentified driver of the Mazda sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The vehicle’s sole passenger, a 19-year-old St. Cloud man, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
As of 5:30 p.m., the northbound lanes on the Turnpike and the exit ramp to I-4 Express are blocked.
The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
