A 33-year-old DeLand man was killed on Wednesday after his motorcycle struck a car that was turning onto a roadway in Volusia County.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal crash took place at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, at the intersection of Glenwood Road and Wilmhurst Road in DeLand.
FHP stated that a 2003 Honda Accord was stopped at a stop sign on Wilmhurst Road when the driver – a 73-year-old man from DeLand – attempted to make a left turn onto Glenwood Road.
As the car began turning onto Glenwood Road, it proceeded to travel directly into the path of a 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was heading westbound on the same roadway. Moments later, the front of the motorcycle collided with the left side of the car.
The motorcyclist was transported to AdventHealth DeLand, where he was pronounced deceased. A trooper noted in the report that the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The elderly driver and sole occupant of the car was also taken to AdventHealth DeLand for treatment of minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
