A woman was fatally struck by “celebratory gunfire” early Wednesday morning, just minutes after ringing in the new year.
According to the Kissimmee Police Department, officers responded to a home located in the 2300 block of Gull Court at around 12:02 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1, after receiving reports that an individual had been shot.
When officers arrived at the home, they found a woman – later identified as 56-year-old Carmen Ochoa – who had sustained injuries that were consistent with a gunshot wound.
Ochoa was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
In a media release on Wednesday morning, KPD stated that the gunfire, which resulted in the fatal shooting, appears to have been “celebratory.”
“This incident is under investigation, and detectives are working to determine the circumstances,” said the agency. “As the investigation progresses, additional information will be provided.”
No further details regarding the incident were provided by Kissimmee police.
